FRIENDS OF RAIL is a grassroots organization formed to support the completion of Honolulu’s 20-mile, 21-station rail transit project. The organization stands on the shoulders of its predecessors, Go Rail Go! and the Committee for Balanced Transportation.

The Committee for Balanced Transportation was formed to bring rail from a dream to a reality. Its members worked tirelessly to support the original 2005 legislation that established funding to plan and construct a mass transit project to serve Oahu’s traveling public.

The Committee for Balanced Transportation was succeeded by Go Rail Go!, which helped support a ballot measure to approve rail, and successfully fought attempts to kill the project by securing approvals for the system design and supporting candidates who championed the construction of the rail transit system.

Now, the torch has been passed to Friends of Rail, whose members are working to see the rail project completed as planned so the people of Oahu can enjoy its benefits, including a quick, safe and reliable alternative to driving, as well as the creation of transit-oriented development along the rail route and its 21 stations, providing much-needed affordable housing and revitalizing many older neighborhoods. We believe rail will improve the quality of life in Honolulu for generations to come.
